Additionally, it seems inconvenient that I cannot give a friendlier name to the channel. Is it possible to at least use a custom handle (similar to YouTube) to make the URL look like mydomain/channels/portfolio instead of using the UID?

We have done something here.
You share your custom domain, and the channel will open automatically without you having to remember the UID or anything.
For example: you just share video.ekgreenlife.com and we will handle the rest.
